Analysis of Four-Bar Linkage

Abstract

In this article a fourbar linkage is analyzed where a relation between the input angle ofthe crank and the output angles of the coupler and output link (crank/rocker) is derived. Aclosed-form equation is found that allows for the calculation of the 2 output angles for any giveninput angle and links lengths. Moreover, the motion of the linkage for 2 cases is animated toinvestigate it in order to classify it depending on its motion regarding which class it is (ClassI, II, or III) as well as whether it is a crank-crank, crank-rocker, or double-rocker. The resultsshow that in both cases the 4-bar linkage is a Class I (Grashof linkage) with one being acrank-crank while the other being crank-rocker.
